Visiting Noank, Connecticut on a hot summer day is a nostalgic trip to classic New England. This charming fishing and lobstering village has become one of my new favorite places in Connecticut.

Technically, Noank is a village or census-designated place, a distinct part of Groton, CT. You won’t find it on a map of Connecticut towns. That said, if you ask anyone where Abbott’s Lobster is, they’ll point you straight to Noank.

Having said that, this New Englander is more of a fan of a newer spot here. More on that later.

A Brief History of Noank, Connecticut

Originally, the Pequot people spent their summers here, calling it Nauyang, meaning “point of land.” After the Pequot War in 1655, James Morgan got the land via lottery in 1712.

Thanks to a perfect location and natural resources, Noank quickly became famous for fishing, lobstering, and boat-building. The C. H. Mallory and Company Steamship line started in 1861, and Robert Palmer’s introduction of steam railways to his shipbuilding plant in 1879 were game-changers for the area.

In 1850, brothers John and Robert Palmer started a shipyard that became the largest wooden vessel building and repair facility in southern New England. They employed over 300 men and built more than 600 wooden vessels.

The house gets its nickname from the intricately carved wooden screen on the porch, featuring fifteen panels, each depicting an Aesop’s fable.

I had the BBQ chicken, local tomato salad, and roasted corn. The lobster roll was a hit with my travel buddies, as well.

In the summer months, the line can be long, but the lobster rolls and house-made potato chips are worth the wait. Abbott’s is great for families and lobster dinners, with plenty of outdoor seating.
