Romantic day trips in CT for the two of you
What are the best New England towns to visit on your romantic day trip? It all depends on what you’re looking for.
Starting in our neck of the woods, along Long Island Sound:
Greenwich, Connecticut

Before you explore other towns near NYC, there’s plenty to do right here! Just 33 miles from Midtown Manhattan, it’s perfect for a quick escape. It’s an hour by train, or 40 minutes if you catch the express.
Check out our full guide to romantic things to do in Greenwich, CT, but here’s a sneak peek:
-
Art museums and galleries in downtown Greenwich
-
Strolls along our gorgeous Greenwich beaches
-
Nearby state parks like Mianus River State Park or Sherwood Island State Park make fantastic day trips from Greenwich, CT
Set Sail on a Private Cruise
Craving some alone time? A private yacht ride on Long Island Sound might be just what you need. Greenwich Boat Charters offers dinner and cocktail cruises, New York Harbor tours, and more. Picture this: the gentle sway of the boat, a stunning Greenwich sunset, and just the two of you. Now that’s romantic.
More short day trips in Connecticut
Looking to venture out a bit? Check out another charming town along Long Island Sound in Southwestern Connecticut, all a short train ride away:
-
Norwalk, CT: A lively beach town with plenty of sass.
-
Westport, Connecticut: An avant-garde coastal gem.
-
Ridgefield, CT: Home to both Impressionist and contemporary artists.
Even Bridgeport, CT can be a romantic spot with the right restaurant and a bit of planning.
Even More Connecticut Day Trips for couples
Our romantic bed and breakfast in CT near NYC is a great base for more romantic day trips. Some of our favorites hug the Connecticut coast, but there are plenty of charming towns to explore.
Day trips within 2 hours of CT
Connecticut’s small size means you can easily explore from one side to the other. For example, the drive from our cozy Connecticut coast bed and breakfast in Greenwich to Stonington (and on to Rhode Island) takes about two hours.
Some of our favorite romantic spots in Connecticut a bit farther out include:
New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven is one of Connecticut’s largest cities, home to Yale University and its amazing Yale University Art Gallery, one of the best free attractions in the state. There are plenty of new restaurants to enjoy, and just exploring the best things to do in New Haven, CT can keep you busy for more than a day.

Hammonasset Beach State Park, one of the best state parks for beaches, is a short drive away in Madison, CT. Southford Falls State Park in Southbury, CT, with its beautiful waterfall, is an underrated gem for a day trip.
New Haven is only an hour by train or car from Greenwich and about two hours via car trip or train ride from NYC. Our romantic inn is within easy reach after a busy day exploring some of the most unique attractions in CT.
Connecticut River Valley
National Geographic calls the Connecticut River Valley one of the world’s last great places for natural beauty. The river is one of the few without a port at its mouth, making the New England marshes, forests, and hamlets around it worth exploring.
Visit Gillette Castle State Park for fantastic photo ops and a commanding view of the river. Follow Route 148 east to Devil’s Hopyard State Park to see a beautiful waterfall. Then, head south on Route 156 through Lyme, stop at the Florence Griswold Museum, cross I-95, and explore Essex and Chester, CT. In Essex, Connecticut, visit the Connecticut River Museum and take a ride on the Essex Steam Train.
Mystic and Stonington, Connecticut

Next is Mystic and Stonington, two charming old towns on Connecticut’s shoreline. These former whaling towns have been beautifully restored and now draw thousands of visitors each year. Mystic Seaport Museum and the fantastic restaurants along the Mystic River make for a hefty list of romantic things to do in Mystic. There’s nothing as romantic as seeing penguins in their natural habitat (in their eyes), in my opinion, at Mystic Aquarium. The next town over has its own charm too, with plenty of things to see and do in Stonington, CT.
Since these are small towns, a day trip from Greenwich can be enough to soak it all in with your significant other. These spots are classic summer getaways in New England.
Hartford, Connecticut
Up for a romantic day trip steeped in Victoriana? Hartford, Connecticut’s capital city, was the wealthiest in America about a hundred years ago, and the best things to do in Hartford, Connecticut reflect that period.
From public gardens to world-class museums, even Mark Twain’s favorite home, there’s plenty to keep you and your significant other busy. Plus, Hartford is a short drive from much of America’s Northeast.
Feeling ambitious? Don’t miss these nearby charming towns:
-
Lake Compounce: The oldest amusement park in America in Southington, CT
Litchfield Hills

The cute little New England towns of Northwest Connecticut are a must-see. With their foliage and picturesque villages featuring pretty white church steeples, the Litchfield County area is ideal in the fall.

Visiting any of these Litchfield Hills towns for a day makes for a perfect fall date:
-
New Preston
