A Brief History of Uncasville, CT
Did you know that Uncasville is named after the legendary Mohegan sachem, Uncas? Pretty cool, huh? Its rich Native American history can be traced back to the Mohegan Tribe, who have had a major presence in the area for centuries.
Colonial Era
English settlers named Uncasville, Connecticut, after 17th-century Mohegan sachem Uncas. He had became an ally of English colonists. The Mohegan, originally part of the Algonquian-speaking Pequot people, declared independence. And during the Pequot War of 1637, they allied with English colonists. Uncas built Fort Shantok, a fortified village, and welcomed English colonists to the Mohegan lands. There’s no documentation as to whether he eventually regretted that decision.
Industrial Era
Uncasville has the accolade of being the site of the first woolen mill in the Unitead States. European-American brothers John and Arthur Schofield established it here.
The Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation set up a manufacturing facility in northeastern Montville, CT, in the 1950s. In 1961, it formed the United Nuclear Corporation with Mallinckrodt Corporation of America and Nuclear Development Corporation of America. The joint effort was for producing nuclear reactor fuel components for the US Navy’s nuclear program. Given the proximity of Uncasville to Groton, Connecticut, it made sense at the time.
Modern Uncasville, CT
During the twentieth century, the Mohegans wanted federal recognition. They provided evidence of their community and cultural continuity, even without any land. In 1994, the Federal government recognized the Mohegan tribe. The Mohegan Nation Land Claim Settlement Act allowed the United States to use the United Nuclear site as Mohegan reservation lands. Congress authorized the tribe to conduct gambling operations on the reservation. In exchange, the Mohegans agreed to relinquish claims to other territories stolen from them over the centuries.
