A Brief History of Avon, Connecticut

The modern town of Avon was established back in 1645. And there’s an even older documented history in the town.

Prehistory in Avon, CT

At the end of the last Ice Age, nomadic peoples built a campsite near the Farmington River. The group is the first confirmed people to populate southern New England, including Avon, Connecticut. The site was revisited multiple times by other nomadic peoples. Though it eventually became buried under sediment. In 2019, campsite remains were excavated in Avon, along with stone tools and artifacts.

European settlement of Avon, Connecticut

Avon was settled by Europeans in 1645 and was originally part of neighboring Farmington. In 1750, locals established the parish of Northington to support a Congregational church.

The Farmington Canal opened in 1828, bringing new business to the village. In 1830, the Connecticut General Assembly incorporated Northington as the town of Avon. The name came from County Avon in England. The town was at the intersection of the canal and the Talcott Mountain Turnpike, linking Hartford to Albany, New York. As such, locals were excited for the expected growth, and incorporated in preparation for it.

That said, the mantra of, “if you build it, they will come” did not apply to Avon. Instead, the rural town waited until the mid-twentieth century for growth, which came from being a suburban enclave of Hartford, Connecticut. The only other newsworthy thing to happen here was the town’s fight against the proposed Interstate 291. The community rejected a proposal for it in the 1960s, denying the expansion and keeping their bucolic vibe.
