A Century of Excellence: The History of Greenwich Hospital
Established in 1906 on Milbank Avenue, Greenwich Hospital grew from humble beginnings as a country hospital. It has steadily grown into a renowned healthcare provider in Connecticut
Early History
On September 12, 1906, the hospital opened its doors in the Octagon House on Milbank Avenue, where it had been chartered since 1903. It had:
- Four attending physicians
- Ten consulting doctors
- Two registered nurses
- And seven student nurses
At the time, the hospital had 24 beds.
In 1914, town resident Commodore Elias C. Benedict offered financing for the construction of a new hospital on Perryridge Road. Many people believed the original structure was insufficient. The general public was initially opposed to the proposed building, believing it would be too large for the neighborhood. World War I delayed construction. But the new facility opened in October 1917, just in time for the following year’s severe influenza epidemic.
Modern Era
On May 5, 1951, a new building at 5 Perryridge Road was dedicated in response to the growing demand for hospital services. The South Wing, completed in 1965, was one of many new wings built over the years.
The hospital outgrew its current structure once more, and an effort was launched to raise funds for a replacement structure. The foundation for the new hospital building was laid in 1997, and it opened in 1999.
Greenwich Hospital became a member of the Yale New Haven Health System in 1998.
A collaboration between:
- Greenwich Hospital oncologists and specialists
- And Yale Cancer Center specialists in the Bendheim Cancer Center facilities
Resulted in the opening of the Yale New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital’s Greenwich Hospital Campus in 2013.
With a mission to be the region’s top medical center, Greenwich Hospital ensures the security and well-being of its patients. A crucial factor in the hospital’s success is its special partnership with Yale New Haven Health. The affiliation has elevated the quality and scope of care available to the community.
