Mission of Fish Church
Although Fish Church is an architectural attraction, it still operates as a normal First Presbyterian Church. If you’re worried about interrupting a service, there is no need. The church always welcomes visitors with open arms, and even invite you to join them during their service.
They make it their mission share grace through worship, congregation, community, fellowship, and by serving others.
History of Fish Church
In 1854, the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford was erected. Exactly 100 years later, the congregation voted to have the church moved to a new location with a new building. Wallace K. Harrison agreed to design their new church. The structure he created resembles a fish, which is one of the main symbols of Christianity. The unique shape of the building is enhanced with stunning stained windows containing more than 20,000 pieces of glass. Each of the windows depicts a scene in the story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the resurrection. The 32-foot high ceilings are crafted with wood from the Canterbury Cathedral in England, which dominates the Chancel. It is a true work of art that you have to see to believe!
Visiting the Church
If you would like to see the church for yourself, you will always be welcome! You may also choose to attend a Sunday worship service, which is fairly traditional but not stuffy. Volunteers will warmly invite you in and give you a bulletin with the order of worship for the day. You will also find hymnals and Bibles in the pews. Following the service, all guests are invited to a coffee hour in the lounge!
There is no dress code at Fish Church, so feel free to come as you are! You will also never be asked to come forward or be singled out, so you may enjoy the service at ease.
