History of the Ferguson Library
In 1877, the library was a gift to the city of Stamford from John Day Ferguson. Mr Ferguson was a philanthropist and Stamford resident who wanted the community to enjoy equal access to information and educational resources.
The library was originally located in a small building on Atlantic Street and had a limited collection of books.
The library moved to a new building on Broad Street in 1909, designed by Egerton Swartwout, and built by Hedden Company. It was designed to accommodate the growing collection and the increasing number of patrons. It became a free public library in 1911.
In the 1980s, the library underwent a major renovation and expansion. The result was a state-of-the-art facility with modern amenities and technology.
Speaking of which, Ferguson Library has the distinction of being the first public library in Connecticut to provide public Internet access. It first did so in 1995.
