Reservoir at the end of the trail along the Mianus RiverSituated in Bedford, New York, the Mianus River Gorge Preserve offers 755 acres of rich woodland and old-growth forest less than an hour away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. The Preserve provides a habitat for hundreds of species of animals, fungi, and organisms in the soil and water, as well as various types of trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, and ferns. Just a 20-minute drive from Stanton House Inn, the Mianus River Gorge is a great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature! Here are some of the things you’ll see at this untouched strip of natural beauty along the border between Bedford, NY, and Pound Ridge, New York.

History of the Mianus River Gorge

It’s believed that tens of thousands of years ago, a glacier blocked the Mianus River from flowing, and as the glacier melted, it formed a large lake at the present site of Bedford Village. When the dam for this lake broke, the huge flow of water started the formation of the Gorge, which continues to this day. Now a National Historic Landmark, the Mianus River Gorge has remained virtually untouched by man since it was carved out of granite many years ago.

Ecology

The Mianus River is more like a stream at this point in its flowThe Mianus River Gorge Preserve is home to a wide variety of important plants and animals. Coyotes and bobcat are frequently spotted in the area, preying on squirrels, mice, and even white-tailed deer. The gorge also provides an ideal habitat for reptiles and amphibians including lizards, frogs, and salamanders, who seek shelter and breed in the standing pools of water throughout the spring and summer months.

Outdoor Recreation

To discover the Gorge’s unique ecology and history firsthand, feel free to explore its five miles of scenic, “guided” trails. They’re “guided” because this writer has never seen anyone who actually works or volunteers here on the hiking trails. It feels wonderfully remote, considering its location. The rugged hiking paths are narrow and winding, giving guests the chance to experience the peace and serenity of remote wilderness. Before you head out, be sure to stop by the Mianus River Park shelter where you can learn more about the Preserve, then grab a trail map and get out there!

Be sure to check their website frequently for upcoming events! The Preserve is open April through November from 8:30 AM to 5 PM.
