A Brief History of Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island in Rhode Island has been part of Native American roots. Thousands of years ago, a glacier shaped the island’s rolling hills and ponds. Native Americans, particularly the Manissean Tribe, were the first inhabitants. They called it “Manisses,” meaning “Island of the Little God.”

In 1614, Dutch explorer Adrian Block sailed here and named it after himself. The island was then settled in 1661. During the Revolutionary War, Block Islanders kept watch on Beacon Hill. They lit fires to warn of approaching enemies.

As far as its gorgeous landmarks go, the island’s first lighthouse was created in 1829 on Sandy Point. The Oceanview Hotel was then built in 1872 by Nicholas Ball, who struck gold during the California Gold Rush.

The Southeast Light, perched on cliffs 150 feet above sea level, was created in 1873. In 1993, it was moved back 200 feet to escape erosion—a remarkable feat. This move signified the important of this landmark to the island.
